How to edit to avoid stretching 4:3 DV material on DVD?
We are trying to achieve the best of both worlds w/4:3 DV material edited in FCP, then authored in DVDSP. I thought there was a way to edit/author the DVD in such a way that the 4:3 displays correctly (fullscreen) on a 4:3 screen, AND that the same appears letterboxed (side bars) on a 16:9 screen (no stretching). Seems that it involved tweaking the 4:3 edit in FCP in some advanced way, then exporting in a different way, then bringing the edited data into DVDSP. Am I dreaming?

This is Pillar-boxed. With bands at the sides.There is nothing to tweak in FC or Compressor.
You have to set that in the DVD authoring application (DVDSTP). Try Pan & Scan.

If it ends up looking stretched it is because the aspect ratio of the TV itself is not set right, and unfortunately you will have no control over that.
Every time I visit my parents I have to correct the aspect ratio setting on their TV, so many people just don’t understand it.
There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.

I’ve end up thinking that there is a kind of sensitive or psychological barrier to the Pillar Boxed picture.
People don’t like the two bars at the sides.
They know they are watching the picture distorted, but..

What DVD Studio Pro really needs is a check box to set the aspect ratio of the viewer’s brain.
I’d pay extra for that…
