I have noticed recently that final cut (7) appears to be dropping frames when playing back in the canvas. I have report dropped frames on playback checked in the user prefs but it is not stopping as it drops frames.

I have noticed this drop frame “effect” on HDV, XDCAM and Prores sequences so it doesn’t seem to be codec specific. I am running a amazingly fast RAID on fiber channel which delivers 300MB/s+.

    Anyone else experiencing this problem?

Yes. I am running an HDV sequence and a ProRes. I just ticked the box to stop warning me and it has been playing fine without actually dropping frames.

Like you I have a fast RAID and the latest 2.9 Nehalem octo with 16 gigs RAM.

The problem is, I have the box ticked to warn me and it drops frames anyway WITHOUT warning me. It is very noticeable in the canvas.

I’ve been having this issue with FCP 7 too but blamed it on Snow Leopard. Went back to Leopard but drop frames persist.

Is this dropping of frames when going out to tape, or just playing back your sequence? And if it’s while going out to tape, what kind of I/O box are you using?

Curious, because we’re still having problems with the AJA cards and outputs stopping due to dropped frames while going out to tape – and we’ve tried different users, different rooms (FCP systems) and different decks. We even tried a different XSAN thinking that it was a bandwidth problem. Still get the dropped frames.

This is with FCP7 and Leopard.

Haven’t checked it going out to tape but I will have too soon when I master a short I am working on. It is skipping in the canvas that is most apparent. This is even on fully rendered sequences running off a very fast array.

    ….oh yeah and I use blackmagic I/O
