I don’t see a problem using Cinema Tools to conform the 23.98 to 24. You can get away with that for the 25, as well.

[Arnie Schlissel] “You can get away with that for the 25, as well.”

Will that slow it down 4% altering audio pitch? That might be a problem, although pitch can be corrected.

[Kevin Monahan] “There are some pick up shots that must be inserted, however, all are XDCAM 25 fps, 24 fps and 23.98 fps. I don’t see a problem with the 24 fps footage, but should I be converting the other two formats before outputting”

    Hey Kev.

try doing a conform to 24.0 of all the media in CinemaTools, I find that unless it is all material of the same subject- most do not see close enough to realize that the content has been speeded up or slowed down unless it is a direct cut in the middle of the action.

a simple dip to color dissolve allows the eye to refresh and more easily accept the new frame rate.

If I conformed everything to 24.0, what are the ramifications for sync sound?

it will pitch shift. I have been known to recut the original audio back in using the natural pauses in speech to re-sync if needed, since you said it was not a lot, this might be an option.

The 3-4% change is well within the voice compression guidelines used to get more said in a commercials, or you could pitch shift in Adobe Sound booth (not sure how the new version of STP handles adjusting pitch)

Thank you Gary. These are nice tidbits of wisdom, and make total sense.

I am having a little trouble conforming my footage in Cinema Tools. It doesn’t seem to be able to reconform the XDCAM clips. Can anyone confirm that XDCAM 25fps cannot be conformed to 24.0fps in CT?

My colleagues on the film really appreciate your help guys. The Cow Rocks!

The film features Academy Award Nominee Klaus Maria Brandauer, a giant of teutonic cinema.

25 – 24 is 4%. best software for pitch conversion in my experience is Pitch N Time or MPEX3.

The new Sound Track Pro has pitch tools which are worth trying on sync & dialog. They may be good enough but I would suggest keeping the original as well so the sound post people can make a choice.

You cannot use CT to conform XDCam clips from 25 to 24. That’s because they are MPEG. You can, however convert them to ProRes and then conform them. That works.

You can batch compress a bunch of clips to ProRes with Compressor.
