STUMPED! HDV Export to Self Contained File issues….FCP 7
Having two major problems that suddenly arose in FCP.
1. When rendering a self contained file using the “current settings” the video looks completely pixelated. Never had this problem before. I have rendered small sections to test and the files look fine. When I render the whole file it looks a mess.
2. Thought the issue was with render files? Cleared them out tried again and the same thing. Tried copying and pasting the sequence in a new project’s time line, same problem.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. For whatever reason this is only happening with this project all of our other renders are fine. I am completely stumped. Thank you for reading this.

Perhaps if you tell us how you are creating this file, details of the codecs you are using and how you are viewing the created file, we can help.

Sure. Thanks for the response. I have the edit completely done, everything plays back fine in the timeline.

Are you sure it isn’t 1440 x 1080?
Also are you using export quicktime movie, export to Compressor, export quicktime conversion?
If so what are your settings and are you looking at the file in quicktime or imported back into FCP. What does quicktime tell you the codec of the exported file is. Do you have the option set to view high quality in quicktime?

Did you ever resolve this? I am having the same problem. I work natively with HDV 1080i60 (I know ProRes is better, but don’t have storage space) and I have been editing with it for years, never this problem…now it seems to do it ramdomly..the exact same thing you described, huge data rate size, tiny in size and pixelated horribly…
All of my settings are correct there is no basic mistake of different codecs or anything of that nature..if I export segments, they look perfect..if I export the whole timeline, crappy…if I export with QT conversion, the export looks fine (although I lose detail…)

I have just had the same experience in PAL land – HDV 1080i – an 80 minute HDV timeline exported to ‘same as sequence codec’ resulted in a horribly pixelated file which was only 2.5 GB in size – when it should have been (at 5 mins per gig) about 16 GB. This resulted in me missing a deadline. Export to ProRes was fine, but I don’t want files that big hanging around on my disks.
