    Hi CC,
I’m new to FCP and my assistant keeps telling me he’s been warned about problems getting a good cutlist when subclips are involved. Here’s our workflow…

    Red Camera
Using Sync-n-Link, which leaves excess track in the synched clips (a no-no in my mind- picture rules!)
That excess causes problems when using ‘replace edit’ as the audio gets cut in out of sync (try it!)
(Same problem exists when we tried creating merged clips- excess audio causes sync problems.)
So we’re creating subclips from the synched clips to cut with (those ‘replace edit’ just fine).

We’ll be doing a DI from the Red files… not sure yet how we’re creating cutlist for DI.

Is there a problem with subclips and good data for conforming?

Thanks for insight- as an Avid editor since ’94, I’m enjoying FCP (except for… and …)

I don’t know the answer to this, I just wanna say hi.

    “Hi.”

(Brian and I worked together when I was starting out. I mean, my FIRST editing job.)

Get in touch with Intelligent Assistance, perhaps they have a solution for Synch-N-Link.

Thanks Kevin, we have contacted I-A, but I’m most concerned about building this show using subclips and having our lists wonky. One extra detail is that we’re using multiple projects- dailies in one, edits in another- to keep it modular and manageable. I know I can’t match frame and find the source clip across projects (a real pain in the neck), but this also might impact making cutlists.

I have NO idea what the exact problem is, but to my understanding, the GOOD thing about sync ‘n link is that it keeps the entire length of both video and audio.
Now if you don’t want that, FCPauxTC reader comes with an helper application that merges BWF with QT (it copies the BWF into the QT), where the length of the file is limited to to the length of the video.

Perhaps that would be a solution for you?
Have a look here and try the demo, should give you enough info to see if it fixes things.

Currently it uses the video length, but i could also make it so that it uses only the part where there is overlap, or pad the missing audio with silence.
