media goes off-line

Please help.
working with RedCam – media converted to ProRes 422 in FCP 6.0.6. And now I’m having issues with media randomly going off-line (but the files haven’t moved or changed etc).
What happened is some media was copied to an external drive so i could work at home then the project was updated here and the media re-linked in the office. Earlier we had an issue with the ” is offline, but that has sense been resolved (things were re-linked and everything is fine for a while).
Now we’re having the odd problem of every clip in the time-line that was part of a multi-clip needs to be rendered. Match-framing brings up the clip as being offline and checking the scene bin shows the clips as off-line as well. The clip (after being rendered) plays fine in the timeline. The strangest part is that after taking a few minutes away from my work to order lunch, everything was back to being offline and needing render (the only thing that may have happened during this time is an auto-save). I’m wondering if this is some new multi-clip bug or if anyone else has ever experienced something similar. I think it all related back to the original ” is offline problem. but once something is linked it should stay linked unless we do something to make it unlinked, right?
FYI – ” is offline refers to FCP losing all reference to the media files and having to reconnect it all one clip at a time.
Any thoughts, or advice or opinions would be appreciated.

Random files going offline are often indicative of drive that is failing. You might want to run Disk Warrior on it, or some other disk utility.
