  How do I do a transition where the footage sorta flips?

  Dear Creative Cow,
  In some old flicks, they use a transition that has a certain meaning where the footage flips fast, showing a black background for a short time and then flipping again to show the next scene. How can I use Final Cut Pro to mimic that transition? Is there a plugin I need to install or can you give me a tutorial? BTW, the transition is meant for obvious effect, sort of like, “Meanwhile, back at Stately Wayne Manor” or “This thing can’t be happening”.

  They use the transition in movies like The Thrill of it All, but they also used it in this video, an old trailer for one of the greatest Xmas specials of all time:

  You can use FCP’s transitions like centre wipe. Wipe the the outgoing clip to black, then after about 4-6 frames wipe the incoming clip from black. You’ll need to reverse the direction of the wipe for the second transition.

  If you want something that looks like your reference, you may need to also add a blur and keyframe it to taste.
