Final Cut Pro 7 offline edit on Final Cut Pro 5
I need to pass on a project from my Final Cut Pro 7 to an editor’s Final Cut Pro 5 running on an older machine. My project is (file bases material with separate sound files) in ProRes422(HQ) 1920×1080 30p and contains many large high-res still images. I believe I have to use XML export and use Media Manager to export the files. As I would like to export low-res(smaller) files for editing on an older machine what is the best Codec to use to maintain 16:9 aspect ratio?
Also do I need to reduce the size of the still tiff images?
I would like to later import the new timeline back into my Final Cut Pro 7 for finishing. Are there any pitfalls in this workflow? -

FCP 5 is not compatible with ProRes. That was introduced with FCP 6.
Try transcoding your footage to DVCPro HD. That is compatible with FCP 4.5 and up and is a very high quality codec.

As Arnie mentioned, ProRes422 works only in FCP 6.0 and later. Use Media Manager to export all your media as anamorphic DV for off-line work. Light codec (file size is 1/10 compared to ProRess HQ 1080), works in all FCP systems since version 1.0. To my opinion DV-quality is good enough for off-line. After finishing off-line just bring FCP Project File back to your system, re-connect files and your ready to on-line.
NOTE: do not chance the ANY media file names in any point of this proses or you are in deep s..t!

I have just tried this and there appear to be some errors when I try and connect the media to the XML file but it seems to work. However the original large still images are not reduced in size and are displayed far too big. Should I reduce them in Photoshop and if so by how much? -
Oh, and one more thing; make a work flow test before starting a big wheel.
Media Manager is a bit tricky…
