I just got a new Imac a few days ago. I loaded Final Cut Pro 7.0 to start messing around but I can’t open a lot of files. I can usually bring them into the project but once they are in the viewer or timeline it says “codec could not be opened”

All of these files I have used on Final Cut Express on my older Mac

chances are that the codec used in these old clips are not FCP (nor FCE) native but rather a non standard codec the support fro which was provided by a third party component such as Perian (https://www.perian.org) … do you happen to know what codec it is that these files are using? there are other ways to do this, but MediaInfo Mac from https://mediainfo.massanti.com/ … is an excellent (and free) clip analyzer that will tell you pretty much anything you might ever (or never) want to know about a media file

No I dont know the codec but I know I never installed anything extra when I had Express installed on my other mac. After I posted the first post I installed that exact same copy of Final Cut Express on this new computer and tried the files but they still don’t open.

Why don’t you tell us exactly what item properties says about your clips? Or go to the QT player and check Movie Info and let us know what it says there.

    All the best,

Ok I just tried doing that but all it gives me after right click, more info is the date the file was last opened. It won’t open in Quicktime. It says, “you may need to install different software to play this file”

if you look back up the thread Louis, you’l see a link to a freeware helper app called MediaInfo Mac … if you go ahead and download it as instructed then you should be able to analyze the file very quickly and easily. Post back with the text of the report and I’m sure someone will be able to help.

I just installed Perian so now everything is working. All that I can’t get is the effects Bad TV and Kaledotile. Can I download these from somehere?
