FC to HDcam tape for Broadcast 720 and 1080?
Hello,
We have an HD 720 sequence in Final Cut which we need to output to an HDcam deck at 1080 for broadcast. Using a G5 with a Kona card.
What is the best way to do this?
What format file are we outputting?

What model Kona? The Kona3X offers cross conversion capabilities.

Which Kona card?
Some Konas cross convert…for example..the Kona 3 cross-converts on the fly to 1080i. The Kona 2 does not.

LEMME SAY IT TOO!
Only the Kona 3 and 3x (well, and LHi) in the AJA line can do this cross conversion from 720p to 1080psf on the fly in hardware. Otherwise, you need to transcode.

I guess that means we can up-convert to 1080?
So, what is the best way to get the video out of FC and onto HDcam tape (with HDcam deck) for broadcast?

It’s called a cross convert and yes, you can do it. You need to use the KOna Control Panel.
Setup your FCP easy setup for the 720p codec that your timeline is in. GO to the Kona control panel and right click on the appropriate output triangle (for this Purpose, let’s say it’s SDI1). So right click on the SDI1 triangle and choose ‘Secondary’ from the drop down menu, then right click again and choose 1080i. You should a little cross convert icon pop up and your HDCam deck will be happy.

Additional question for you…
I have never output any video from FC for broadcast (onto a deck). I usually just do web delivery (.mov, .mpeg4, etc.). How do you export true video from FC to tape? What format do you choose?

The format you edited. You don’t convert anything. The card plays out your footage to tape. Not sure by what you mean by TRUE video. Hopefully your sequence is already full resolution ProRes or Uncompressed HD. Then you just choose the option that matches your footage in the VIDEO PLAYBACK, and the cross convert settings in the Kona CP.
NOW…know that when you cross convert upon output to tape, there will be an offset. How much? Dunno…it changes. Could be 4 frames, could be 9. Gotta to test outputs then stop and check what your offset needs to be. Having never output to tape before, you have chosen one of the more challenging outputs to do. You have to black the tape in the proper format, you have to check your offset, you have to have proper REF going to the deck…
