  virgin to 29.97p editing

  Hi,

  My client gave me a drive with Quicktime footage frpm P2 that was shot in true 29.97p, without a 3:2 pulldown (except for one clip). In addition to this, I need to access & intercut footage from a DVD TS file.

  I am exporting the latter from MPGEG Streamclip to QT files.

  There are three variables occuring here. Being that I’ve never worked this way before, can anyone recommend the best way to set up my FCP 6 project? Should I be exporting the TS file differently? How do I set up fro 29.97p with and without pulldown?

  Working with: Mac pro quad core, six gigs of RAM, standard issue video card for a 2007 model.

  Needless to say, client wants best quality possible. Please be gentle… I’m pretty new at this. 😉

  29,97p has no pulldown, 3:2 pulldown is how 24p is recorded in an “over 60 signal”. So what do you have true 29.97p or 24p recorded at 29.97?

  When you rip the footage off the DVD you should rip it to the framerate that it was encoded as, 23.98 or 29.97 but as uncompressed. Then convert it in Compressor to match your sequence’s frame rate and upconvert if needs but. Will have to do some test to get the best results.

  The majority of footage is “true” 29.97. So I set the FCP sequence at 29.97, and brought that footage in. It doesn’t need to be rendered so I think the settings are ok.

  r.e. the TS footage, I exported (via MPEG Streamclip) as uncompressed 29.97 — yet that footage wants to be rendered when cut into timeline. I’m confused as to 1. why, and 2. what do I need to do in Compressor that I haven’t already done by outputting through Streamclip?

  All these rates and formats and codecs get more confusing by the week.
  I await enlightenment and Alka Seltzer. Thanks!

  Did u rip the DVD @ 720 by 480 or 640 by 480?
  Is ur timeline square pix? or 720 by 486?

  I created a new project, imported production’s QT footage and dropped a clip in the timeline. Matched the settings to clip, i.e.

  frame size – 960 x 720
  aspect ratio – HD 960 x 720 16:9 (did not offer sq. or rectangular)
  pixel aspect ratio – HD 960 x 720
  field dom. – none
  editing timebase – 29.97
  compression – DVCPRO HD 720p60

  The majority of clips are in this format. Then I ripped the DVD
  TS file in MPEG Streamclip. It defaulted to:

  frame size 854 x 480
  pixel aspect ratio – square
  field dominance – 0
  editing timebase 29.97
  compression – Apple FCP uncompressed 8 bit 4:2:2

  Should I re-export, attempting to match the DVCPRO HD 720p60 codec? Would I then change HDTV 720p? The frame size defaults to 1280 x 720 in Streamclip.

  In FCP settings, there is no 960 x 720 for frame size. I need to match the ripped DVD clips to the production footage, which comprises 75% of the project.

  Very confused…
