drop frames
Hi,
I’m getting a warning message on FCP about dropped frames. I turned down the data frame rate, put it to Safe, I turned off my computer and did everything to make it playback smoothly and it’s still acting up. I have 635 GB of free space on the ezternal hard drive that this project is running on. I have an iMac, Leopard. I had to change the sequence settings so they matched the clips and I had to rendr everything before editing..its a big project, 9 hours of small clips that are divided between 7 sequences. What could be the problem? How can I fix this annoyance?Thanks

Laura,
Do you have Disk Warrior? If so run it on all drives. If not, get it and run it. It’s essential for all who edit on Macs.
Also, fix permissions on all drives using the Apple Disk Utility.
Then, report back here and let me know how those solutions worked.

Why did you have to render? If things are set up right, there should be NO rendering. So what format are you working with? You don’t mention that. And what hard drive are you using? How is it connected?

Shane may be onto the right thing Laura, I thought your dropped frames suddenly cropped up after you’d already been editing for a while without them.

I had to render because the files were .mov files and 48khz for audio insted of 44.1
I’m using a 1tb harddrive (la cie). connected through usb. I have 635 gb of free space so its not a lack of space…. -

.mov files…all that says is that they are QT files. WHAT CODEC? Do FILE>GET INFO and tell us what it says.

USB drives won’t work for digital video.

Drive types and how good they are when it comes to dealing with video…it sends data in packets or bursts, and video needs a constant steady stream.
USB 2 = BAD
Firewire = GOOD
e-SATA = more GOOD
Internal SATA = more better GOOD
eSATA RAID = more MORE better GOOD
4 gig FIbre = Just about the best you can get! (great for SAN networks)
External PCIe = Da Bomb! 5 times faster than FibreShane

And, in addition to what Shane said, 48khz is pretty much the standard in FCP.
More important however are all of the other things that Shane mentioned.

The codec of all the clips is HDV 720p30 quicktime.
So do you suggest I find another hard drive that is firewire?? Is that the source of the problem (that it’s USB?) -

Yes. USB is not good for editing video.
