  • Trouble removing pulldown in from film footage

Posted by Eric Goldstein on July 18, 2007 at 10:01 pm

    Hi,

I’m using footage shot on film at 23.976 transferred to video with pulldown added resulting in 29.97 footage. I’m using the footage in a 29.97 comp. I’ve had AE guess (Interpret Footage Main). It correctly identifies the footage as lower frame first and 29.97 speed. It chooses a pulldown pattern. But the footage continues to show artifacts. I’ve tried using the other pull down patterns, but this either doesn’t work at all or meerly shifts the artifacts to a different place. I haven’t run into this problem before. Generally AE has done a good job of removing the pull down.

Any ideas what might be going on?

    Thanks,

    Eric

Is there anyway you can contact the people who added the pulldown to find out what pattern they used?

Also, is the footage assembled from different clips? You may have to either cut the footage and import/interpret each differently, or import the footage five times, using a different pulldown cadence each time. Then you can cut out the “wrong” cadence clips from each layer. You see?

    Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your thoughts. I had a momentary brain lapse. I’ve been working at 1/4 and 1/2 res in draft mode, because there are so many layers. I hadn’t thought about it, but the apparently, the AE doesn’t do the pull down compensation in these modes. When I viewed problem frames at best quality and full res, the compensation worked and everything looked fine.

    Thanks anyway,

    Eric
