output HD timeline to SD DVD recorder via MXO2
Guys,
I’m having a hard time with this. I have a MBP…FCS7…MXO2.
HDV timeline – basic cuts…setup print to video to go out 8-bit NTSC through the MXO2 S-video to my set-top DVD recorder.
I could transcode to MPEG2 files…but my set top dvd recorder is my preferred method.
2 problems:
1 – output is letterboxing. I’ve gone into settings and setup anamorphic, but it won’t output HD as anamorphic. When outputting NTSC DV timeline…the anamorphic works correctly.
2 – quality looks like crap. Jagged edges. I have a feeling it may have something to do with field order? If I change the sequence to DV and render it down…it looks good if I change field order to bottom first, top first shows ghosting in motion.
Any ideas why?
P.S. Is the Matrox box considered a professional box? I know Walter and Shane always talk about the Kona. But the portability of the Matrox appealed to me.

The Matrox IS a professional box. I have this unit on my system. But you’ll have to wait until I get home and crank up the system until I can get back to you on that.

On the video output tab of the system preferences for the MXO2 is a setting for aspect ratio – labelled “16:9 to SD aspect ratio”. Have you tried adjusting this?
Also, try adjusting the output format in the top tab of this page. I would note, however, that I would expect to see some loss of quality going from HD to SD – that includes more jagged edges…

I’d also add that I use AJA and Blackmagic products regularly, as well as owning an MXO2. I consider all of them to be excellent, well made professional products. The hardware scaling on the MXO2 is excellent. You are outputting S-Video to a DVD recorder. As with MPEG2 file output, this puts limits on the quality you could expect, irrespective of the box you are using. HDV can also be some of the noisiest and busiest HD footage, and prone to these issues. However, do try adjusting the hardware scaling option in the preferences, to see if this improves matters.

I found a solution…if I try to do a “print to video” output using the SD-NTSC output of the matrox, the HD timeline looks like crap on my monitor and it is letterboxed, regardless of the option – center cut – anamorphic – letterboxed I have selected.
However, if I change the “set main channel output to” to SD…it plays the HD timeline in real time…anamorphic as I have selected…
That was my solution and works for me. I’ll update if I experience anything different. I found it interesting how the 2 methods gave me different results…I would have expected the same results from each.
