I created an animated movie (a flying bird) that I want to import into Motion to fly over some clouds in Motion. When I imported the movie, however, it took the whole frame, black background and all. I need to do some more animation builds in final cut, so I need some help with this one. Can you nest a series of edits in final cut and move that entire nest like one piece? Is there a way to get it into motion with a transparent bg, without having to mess with keys?

Any solutions? I can use Photoshop, Motion, or Final Cut to accomplish what I want.

    Thanks for your help.

you can export from FCP with an alpha by using a codec that supports alpha (I’ve had best luck with png). important step is to make sure it is NOT rendered when you export it, as rendering marries it to the background.

    give that a try

forgive my novice-ness, but when I went to export I didn’t see any useful options. Could you maybe give me a little more info? I use pngs all the time, but for importing into motion or FCP. Not sure how to export out…

    Thanks again.

make a new sequence and change the codec (sequence settings) to png (others will work, animation+ seems to be the preferred, but I’ve always had trouble with it, as long as the codec supports alpha channels it should work).

copy/paste your effect into the empty sequence and make sure it is NOT rendered.
Then export as (what I call a FCP QT) quicktime, and the resulting file SHOULD contain the alpha, and therefore, key properly in Motion.

The “useful options” will not be in the export dialog, but need to be properly set before you export.

Let me know if this helped.
a cow search might reveal TONS more info, but this is the basic workflow
