Is this a physical effect? A mixture of both physical effects and some AE work?

I only watched the first min. I assume you are referring to the light streaks. All of the lighting effects were done in post. I saw nothing that looked “physical”. These effects could be done with a stroke, or 3D stroke in AE. They could also be created with a particle emitter such as Particular.

Maybe, but I wouldn’t be quite so certain. All the live action looks like it was shot stop-motion, which would make using practical lighting techniques in-camera a plausible way to go.

I am sure this was done the same way the new Sprint (?) ads were done (i’ll see if I can dig up that link). It’s stop motion with people using small colored pen lights etc. to create the shapes and “move” them around in space. There may be some post work to clean it up and comp it, but it’s good old fashion long exposure stills with a moving light source. You COULD do it with Particular. But it wouldn’t have that organic look that the video does. Though it would be easier to make your shapes, you’d need to tweak it to give a real organic feel.

I doubt it was done in post alone. I know something similar could be created with a praticl lighting effect, but if you look closely, You can see the light reflecting off various surfaces.

I went back and took a closer look. The monitor at my office is very dark and does not show a lot of detail in the darker areas. I can now see how they used colored LED lights.

You can see people holding the flashlights in many of the shots… take a look at the very last shot.

You can also see very blurry images behind the animations, suggesting that there are people holding lights in the photos.
