29.97 back to 23.98…
Ok, so I have a friend that, despite my telling him how to properly setup his workflow for his film and then telling him to call me when he got ready to start the editorial for his film, decided not to heed my advice and setup his workflow for his film incorrectly. Let me back up a bit here.
The film was shot on 16mm. The telecine house made HD CAM masters (1080, 23.98fps). From those masters, DVCAMs were made (29.97fps, 720×480). Now, obviously what you have to do is digitize the dailies in a 29.97 project, batch reverse telecine that footage in Cinema Tools (converting the footage to 23.98) and then create a 23.98 project wherein you can work with the new 23.98 footage. That way, when you go to online, you’re working in the same frame rate as the masters. At least, this is the way I used to do on FCP back in the day.
What my friend did was digitize the footage and then continue to cut using the 29.97 footage. Now he has to go to online and is realizing what a big mess he made. I have never had to deal with this before and was wondering if there is anyway to fix this without having to re-cut the film. Logically, it seems somewhat impossible, but I was hoping some of you might have come across this problem before and have a good solution for it. Does Automatic Duck have something for this or…? Any help you can afford me would be much obliged.

Export an EDL. Use Cinema Tools to convert the EDL from 29.97 to 24fps. It is an EXPORT option. Then in the online they can import that 24fps EDL. Only cuts and dissolves will appear. Layering, fancy effects, plugins used in the shots…will not transfer.

Do his captures from the DVCam tapes match the TC from the HDCam tapes? Check the TC of the QT files against the window burn to see if the minutes and seconds line up.
If so, he may be able to export an EDL & use Cinema Tools to convert the EDL from 30 to 24 that can be used for an online. If not, he may be SOL.
