make an opening book with video on pages
Posted by Dionne Knapp on July 14, 2007 at 2:03 pmHeeeeelp!!!
I hope someone here can help me with this!
I am an intertern at a small broadcasts tudio and I was given an assignment to prepare a 30 second spot for an upcoming local conference centered on teaching children to read.
My idea for the beginning is to have a book with the title of the conference on the cover opening and place the highlights on the “pages” of the book. The “page” turn with each new highlight and at the end, the book closes .
The trouble is, I’m just an intern and I have NO clue how to acomplish this. They use After effect 7 and I’ve never used affter effects.
Can any one tell me how to do this or at least do the beginning for me (the book opening)? Is there anyone who will do this for me or give me a step-by-step on how?
This is my first assignment and I don’t want it to look cheesy. We also use Avid Media Composer if that helps.
Thanks

July 14, 2007 at 5:19 pmThis is going to involve a LOT of work to sell the effect.
Basically, CC Page Turn is going to be your friend.
You will want to pre-compose all your pages in separate compositions. I would have a photo of a page and then lay the video highlight on top of that layer. You might want to set a mask with some feathering to have the video blend in to the page layer. Or, if you want the hard edge, leave the mask off.
Once you have all your page compositions set up, place them in a new composition in the order you want them. You should have a separate composition for your book cover as well.
The problem with CC Page Turn is your pages won’t have any depth to them. No terrible for a page, but will look a little silly with the cover. You might want to adjust the anchor point to the left-hand side of your cover and use rotation to “open” the book.
Once you’ve got your cover open, apply the CC Page Turn to all the layers in order. Keyframe for effect. Apply a rotation to the back cover and you’re done.
Of course, this is EXTREMELY simplified and most likely won’t look realistic. A 3D program would be better for that.
BUT, with the right camera placement (Close to the page so you don’t see the entire book open), you might be able to sell it.
Hopefully that will give you a little bit of a place to start.
Also, check out this tutorial by Andrew Kramer on creating a Flip-Book effect. It’s VERY involved, but he does some awesome stuff that goes a long way towards selling the look.

July 14, 2007 at 5:50 pmHi ennoidyam,
I would use a graphics drawing program – Illustrator, Fireworks, Photoshop (not the best) etc. to draw each “page” and the “covers”. Then put the pages on the time line of your video editor, and use the video editor’s transitions to make a page turn from page to page. I use Sony Vegas, and have done something similar. I had some kids draw a “cartoon” on separate sheets of paper. I shot the pages with a digital camera, ran the images through Photoshop to clean them up some, the put them on the Vegas time line. Wal-la instant book!
I hope this helps.Richard

The 3D book is top left (AE 3D space). Maybe you can use it for the cover, with page turn for the pages, I dunno.

July 15, 2007 at 12:33 amWithout any experience or basic knowledge of how to use AE will make what you want to do very difficult… that being said, the tutorials metioned in the other posts will be your best bet at your attempt.
However, I think Richard’s suggestion to use a video editing software and transitions (such as Hollywood FX) will definately be the simplist but may not have the cool factor of animation like effects that can be accomplished with AE. But… if you have to learn AE as well as complete a project… well, you may hit the wall on so many issues that the only way to complete your project within a reasonable length of time would be to use a standard pro-level video editings software.

July 15, 2007 at 11:50 pmIf you’re AE knowledge is up for this then…
here’s a link to a TVC we did earlier this year, done in AE.

(Apologies for the poor encode)– Get a still of the paper texture you require, or just use the video images you want.
– Make the pages 3D by hitting the 3D switch for the layers
– Set the anchor point to the middle left hand side of the page (use pan behind tool), now rotate the page using the Y Rotaion. Set Rotation Keyframes for the beginning of the layer (When page is front on) and a keyframe for the end posion of layer (Once it’s turned)
– activate Motion Blur for the composition and each layer and you should have something that looks okay. Not super realistic but okay nonetheless.I also duplicated the pages, used levels and transparency and offset the keyframes by 1 frame to give the shadow effect of the pages turning. Hope that helps…good luck with the project.

August 9, 2007 at 1:00 pmstevem1928, that was really great!
I’m looking to do something similar… making the cover of a book close to end a sequence I’ve done.
Thanks to everyone that posted those great links to some great tutorials that directly cover this topic. They are going to be so helpful to me.ennoidyam,
Watch the links, be patient and good luck.
