Alternate codec for chroma-keyed DV footage
I am chroma-keying standard-def DV footage shot on a Panasonic DVX-100b. I’m working in FCP, and I am wondering if I might pull a better chroma key by first converting my DV footage into a different format (such as Apple ProRes 422).
If so, can I just import my DV footage, and make my sequence an Apple ProRes sequence? I played around a little bit, but this project is on a time crunch.

If you capture with a capture card in a 4:2:2 codec like ProRes or 8-bit uncompressed you might have better luck. I’m not certain if you’re locked out of 4:2:2 by recording DV. Try with a short segment and see. Also, you might want to do the key in Motion with Primatte. It’s a better keyer than FCP’s. Also, Keylight in AE is excellent.

One thing to remember is not to go back to DV after compositing your shots. Especially when you blur the chroma in Keylight (which is slow but fantastic) or other keyer. A straight transcoding to ProRez will not improve your shots going into the key but it will improve things on the way out.

The Chroma filtering that you get on capturing to 422 (with the convenient capture card) should helps the keying.
You may try as well Nattress “Chroma Smooth/Sharpen”, “Nicer” or similar.
