  • MiniDV to P2? Or MiniDV to Final Cut Pro

Posted by Andrew Dollar on August 19, 2009 at 11:42 pm

I couldn’t find any information on this. I checked the manual that came with my camera (Panasonic HVX) as well. I have footage on a miniDV tape (filmed in 720, 24p on a different camera) that I’m trying to edit on a Macbook Pro. I tried connecting the camera to the computer but it wouldn’t capture properly (not synched, dropped tons of frames). So I was wondering if I could transfer from the tape to my P2 card. Or maybe I’m doing something wrong with the import settings in Final Cut Pro HD.

[Andrew Dollar] “I have footage on a miniDV tape (filmed in 720, 24p on a different camera) “

Not possible. DV is 480. 720×480….if that is what you meant. 720p is possible on a miniDV tape, but that is HDV, and JVCs HDV, and that wouldn’t even PLAY on the camera…so I am guessing you mean 720×480 24p. Shot with DVX?

Did you choose the appropriate Easy Setup? Are you capturing to a firewire drive, or the system drive?

[Andrew Dollar] “So I was wondering if I could transfer from the tape to my P2 card.”

Nope…only P2 to tape. Not the other way.

And what version of FCP are you running, and what machine?

“so I am guessing you mean 720×480 24p”

Yes, sorry, that’s what I meant.

    “Shot with DVX?”

I’m not sure. It was either a JVC or Panasonic, that’s all I know.

“Did you choose the appropriate Easy Setup? Are you capturing to a firewire drive, or the system drive?”

I went through and selected all the different types of Easy Setups but there was still “no communication” at the Log and Capture. Under Capture Settings I selected FireWire NTSC and DV NTSC 48 kHz (and anamorphic). I’m capturing to the internal drive.

“And what version of FCP are you running, and what machine?”

I’m using 6.0.6. The machine is a MacBook Pro 10.5.7 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.

When I try playing back the tape in the camera, I get nothing but colorful static/fuzz/noise.
