  • removing pulldown issues with cinema tools vs. after effects

I apologize if this is the wrong forum to post this question. There isn’t a Cinema Tools forum.

I have two clips. Both clips are Apple ProRes 422 1080i/29.97 (with pulldown added. So originally 23.98)

Both were shot on the EX3 in SQ mode. Both were ingested in Final Cut.

Clip 1 was taken directly from the Final Cut capture directory. I opened it in quicktime and did an export as ProRes 422 with 1920×1080 leaving all other settings the same as the original file(29.97i). With this clip I went into Cinema Tools and did a reverse telecine successfully. I left the clip at the first frame (an AA frame) and selected AA in the “fields” option. And the clip successfully removed the pulldown.

I then took the clip into After Effects and removed the pulldown in the “interpret footage” settings. I outputted it and it also removed the pulldown correctly.

Clip 2 was edited in a Final Cut timeline matching the settings (HDV,1080i/29.97). Then I sent it to Color, adjusted it, then rendered it with ProRes (thus giving me the ProRes 422 1080i/29.97 format). I then took the rendered clip from Color’s render folder and brought it into Cinema Tools. The first two frames had the interlaced look. I opened up “reverse telecine”. So I lined up an AA frame from the clip (the first frame in the clip was a BC frame), and made sure the “fields” option was set to AA. I then processed it. The resulting file was not correct. Cinema Tools removed one of the 5 frames, but left one frame interlaced incorrectly. (just in case I had the wrong “fields” option set, I tried the other 4 options, but all results ended up worse)

I then took Clip 2 and brought it into After Effects. I opened the “interpret footage” setting and did “guess pulldown. It found the correct cadence (SSWWW I believe it was). I then exported the clip and it appeared to remove the pulldown correctly.

I would like to use Cinema Tools. I avoid After Effects if I can for things such as this. It takes much longer to process each clip.

Am I doing something wrong? Does Cinema Tools not do it correctly if I’m not using a clip that’s been cut down in Final Cut? The cadence of Clip 2 is BC CD DD AA BB while Clip 1 is AA BB BC CD DD. Which still wouldn’t answer why After Effects effectively removes the pulldown.

    Any Thoughts?

    Thanks,
    Thatcher

    Yes, remove pulldown before Color.
