    Im making podcasts.
Sequence is set up as 1024×768 Animation.
Clips i recorded are same specs.

    Running 2.16 Intel iMac.
External firewire 400 WD Caviar Black 1TB.

When editing my clips it is running super slow! I see the drive light flickering on an off. I can’t move aroun din the sequence even. total lag!

WHy is that? All media is on the external drive.

Animation is not a real time codec. Use a codec there are easy setups for, such as uncompressed or ProRes. You will never get good performance with custom non-standard settings

    John,

He won’t be able to playback uncompressed off a firewire 400 drive without dropping frames either.

how should i have my settings? Should i set them to a DV codec to edit with, and then switch to animation when outputting?

    HI.

Try and go with ProRez. If it works use that. DV has less color information and may give you head ace 🙂

Option would be replacing external drive to FW 800 or something better.

Ack. Good point…gonna need at least FW800 for that (and even that might be dicey as the drive fills up)
