Feathering edges without feathering edges that touch the edge of the screen
Posted by Dustin Parsons on August 12, 2009 at 8:40 pmI’d like to make a simple wipe transition as someone walks past the camera, revealing a different shot behind the person as they pass.
The problem I’m having is that the behind shot is revealed along all the edges of the screen.
Using either crop or a garbage matte, is possible to feather the edges of a video without feather the edges that touch the edge of the screen?

August 12, 2009 at 9:01 pmTry clicking on the Canvas and press Command – (minus) to make the image smaller. Grab what seems to be Point 1 and Point 2 in your garbage matte and drag them higher just off of the video image area till the feather is not viewable. do the same for the bottom points. Adjust the Mask Feather filter.
hope that helps.

August 12, 2009 at 9:08 pmI’ve tried that. I’m able to move the points way past the edge of the screen but their effect has no change.

August 12, 2009 at 9:26 pmIf you are adjusting the smooth selector in the matte it will effect the matte by clipping the points off screen. If so back off on the smooth a bit and resize the image of the woman a few points. 101, 102… that should help a bit.

August 12, 2009 at 9:35 pmUnfortunately, the problem persist whether smoothing is applied or not. Both the smooth and feather, used independent of each other or together, cut into the frame no matter how far the points are away from the edge.

August 12, 2009 at 9:40 pmA round about way to do this is, duplicate the shot of the woman, and stack the duplicate directly on top of the original. Then Feather the duplicate that is on top and don’t feather the original on the bottom. Then you can just right crop the original over past the edge you want feathered, this will hide the hard edge of the original and leave the feathered edge of the duplicate showing. Then, as you’re subject moves off screen, you’ll just have to key frame your crop to follow.
Hope that made sense.

August 12, 2009 at 9:50 pmMakes perfect sense, that’s actually how I’ve been doing it. I was just hoping there was a non-roundabout way of doing it – like a garbage matte plugin that lets you move the effect of the points past the edge of the screen. But every plugin I’ve tried is constrained by the same limitations as Final Cut’s garbage mattes.

August 12, 2009 at 10:01 pmAlso use the Mask Feather Filter and place underneath the Matte, Don’t use the Feather control in the garbage matte.
I always add the Mask Feather when I want crisp edges on the screen.
good luck

August 12, 2009 at 10:07 pmPerfect! Mask Feather is just what I was looking for. It was the feather option in in the garbage matte properties that was giving me the problem.
Thanks for all your help Victor.
