• Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy

  Which WD Hard Drive?

  Hi,

  I’m looking into buying two Western Digital Hard Drives each 1 TB, one which I will use solely for time machine and the second for final cut, I have 3 options, WD Caviar Black, WD Caviar Green and WD Caviar Blue. Has anyone had any good/bad experiences with any of them?

  Edit: I just saw on the Apple forums that the WD 640 Caviar Black 6401AALS…..: Media scratch disk WD 1.0 Caviar Green 10EADS………: Back up Time Machine

  Can anyone tell me if this is true?

  Black are the fastest. They go up to 1 Tb.
  Green takes the least power and has variable rpm. They go up to 2 Tb
  I’ve used both and found them to be great.

  Blue are good performance but go up to 750 Gb.

  Thanks, and it shouldn’t any problem to buy one black and one green and put it in the same mac pro, correct?

  Just curious, I guess I’m going to go with the Caviar Black. I’m just wondering how WD can have 3 different versions of internal HD where each one boast stronger features than the other. Take the Caviar Blue for example, “With SATA and PATA interfaces, cache sizes ranging from 2 MB to 16 MB, WD Caviar Blue drives offer a full range of performance features. Pick the drive that suits your needs with the confidence in knowing that all WD Caviar Blue drives are built to the highest standards of quality and reliability. ”

  Would that imply, that if I were to get the Caviar Black, its not the most reliable hard drive they make?

  I think its Blue at the low end and if you need PATA.
  Green at the high capacity, but low power segment. These are variable rpm, so I’m not sure how that affects editing video.
  Black are the fastest.

  If you need rock-solid reliability, and don’t mind paying for it, consider Enterprise drives.
