If you have multiple copies of a precomp in a composition does it have to render each one?
Hi there
i know this is probably a stupid question but basically ive got a composition of some patterns drawing on and ive multiplied it a few times in the main composition, when rendering the main one does it have to render each composition, or is there a best way of doing this so rendering doesnt take so long?
any tips would be much appreciated!

Actually sorry my stupid mistake! its not a precomp, its a psd layer that ive drawn on top of so it has about 50 paint layers…and then im duplicating that….i imagine it has to render the paint layers on each version?

Yep. If I’m not mistaken, AE caches frames, not layers. So if one frame is the same as the next, it caches it, but AE renders all layers in a frame one at a time.
If you want, you could check the render details in the queue – click the little triangle at the left of the render queue.

If the paint effects are the same each time the layer is duplicated you could precompose it, (make sure the paint effect goes into the precomp), and then replace all the duplicate layers with this composition (Option/Alt+Drag from project window onto the layers you want to replace, they should be selected first), then you can create a proxy for that comp and it won’t have to render each time, the cache might even be clever enough to speed things up without the proxy seeing as it’s being used multiple times but creating a proxy will ensure it works.
