  Freeze During Capture

  Hi,

  I’m trying to capture video from an HDV camera. Capture settings are Apple Intermediate Codec 1440x1080i60. I’ve tried capturing to both the internal as well as an external drive (although I only have a USB2.0 connection for the external).

  Problem: at 6mins into capture, FC consistently freezes and capture stops, although video playback on the camera continues. (I have to force quit the program and start again). The file that remains on the scratch disk is a Unix Executable File.

  Given this information, can someone help me capture this footage. Unfortunately a day of research has left me with little to work with.

  You cannot capture to the internal drive and USB 2.0 is not fast enough for sustained video capture.

  You need a faster media array with a faster connection, FW 800 is really the minimum recommended drive, though FW 400 will work.

  Also it is a BAD idea to capture to your internal system drive, it has enough to do running the OS and applications, that is why you have issues capturing to the internal drive.

  There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.
  Don’t let technology get in the way of your creativity!

  Thanks for the feedback.

  I’m using FW800 to connect the camera to my Mac. However, the feed to the external is USB. Trying to capture to the internal HD was a last resort; I can see why you would say it’s a bad idea.

  I’m assuming the problem is with the USB to the external. Perhaps I should purchase an eSATA cable? Funny part is that we’ve used this exact method on another Macbook without the same error. Capture would sometimes stop, but we would rewind the tape by one minute and begin capture again. I’m assuming that capturing stopped because USB wasn’t fast enough, but still, Final Cut didn’t crash.

  Using this same Macbook (as in paragraph two) on the tape I’m capturing now, results in the program freezing on that machine as well. Could it possibly be the tape? or the settings?
