AVCHD to ProRes Benchmarks FCP7 — MUCH FASTER!
Posted by Russell Lasson on July 27, 2009 at 9:02 pmMy 2.8Ghz 8-core Mac Pro with FCP7. From AVCHD files on FW800 drive and Macs running 10.5.7
ProRes Proxy – 3x real-time
– 4 minute clip in 1:24ProRes SQ – 2.26x real-time
– 4 minute clip in 1:46ProRes HQ – 2x real-time
– 4 minute clip in 2:00All 8-cores in activity monitor maxed out.
On a 3Ghz 8-core machine with FW800 with FCP 6.0.6
ProRes SQ – real-time
– 4 minute clip in 4:03So FCP 7 makes import twice as fast as it used to.

July 27, 2009 at 9:37 pmVery nice! If only we used AVCHD… 😉
How’s the CPU load for general operations, say a few CC filters?

August 8, 2009 at 9:48 amI’m sorry if this is the wrong topic to post in, if you want me to open a new topic please say so.
I’m looking into buying a budget pro-sumer camera and I pretty much narrowed my options down to the JVC GY-HM100 and Panasonic AG-HMC151 (euro version of the HMC150). The Panasonic is the better camera but is AVCHD whilst the JVC’s files can be handled natively in FCP, which would benefit the projects I intend to use the camera for.
Basically I’m looking for arguments that can help me making a decision. All the camera guys I talked to recommend the Panasonic, but what would you as a FCS3 users say? Would these faster transfer times of AVCHD make it more interesting to choose the Panasonic?
(Right now I’m still running FCS2 because I need to end a few running projects first).

September 10, 2009 at 1:27 pmThat is nice the speed… But what it is good for if the picture isn’t clear? there is still this “strobe effect” going on? but why?
is I take the sd card out of my canon hf100 and put it in a sd reader on the plasma tv it is fine.. the motion is fluent and it is clear. but i I record it to mac the motion starts to jump a bit…?? Why apple can’t handle the AVCHD codec correctly? Friend of my used pinacle on windows and there it was ok.. Fluent just like on the tv… But if I put it in FCP it is corrupted.. and i tried all settings and just could not get it clear..
Any body has an idea??THX
