Blu-ray authoring support – do we really need it
Many have pointed out that the new DVDSP has no support for Blu-ray authoring yet. But if all one needs is to make a good-looking simple-menu Blu-ray of a client HD production, then we could do it in Toast for a while now. And now Compressor lets you do it.
If you needed to author a title for mass duplication, then other solutions do it too – Encore, DoStudio etc.
But more importantly even if DVDSP supported Blu-ray authoring, how many FCP editors or even post houses out there have clients who would pay the per-title AACS licence fees and per disc duplication royalty.
So, supposing DVDSP supported Blu-ray authoring, and your client wants a title authored for duplication here are the fees to be paid…
AACS Content Provider Agreement Fee: this is the fee that a studio or content holder must pay to become an AACS Content Provider. Its $500 per annum, or $ 3000 one-time.
Content Certificate and Order Fulfilment Fee: this fee is for each glass master produced. It is $500 per title. Client wants a version, $ 500 again. Client makes changes after master, another $ 500
Media fee: this fee is applied for each disc replicated, and its $0.04 per disc.
So, as a Blu-ray author, you pay $ 500 p. annum. You could spread charge this to clients.
Additionally, for the CC, your client pays $500 and if he makes 10000 discs he pays another $400.I’ve run this by many of my clients and unless they are big ticket producers, they back off when they hear of these fees.
Such is the Blu-ray ‘bag of hurt’.
So, Compressor-made simple Blu-ray will do for the moment, thank you.
