Asst. Editor organizes media while Editor works?
Okay- not sure how to word this- but just looking for ideas.
I want to have a setup with basically two networked computers (on the cheap, won’t spring for xsan) and be able to have the assistant editor digitizing and keeping the media organized, while the editor works. So if I need to move a file the editor won’t need to reconnect suddenly. And we don’t have conflicting project versions. What is the best way to configure this? What would be the issues involved?

Ethernet based SAN like the one I installed. It can be tailored to whatever your needs. We have three FCP workstations and 3 iMacs all tied together via ethernet. All can cut 1080i ProRes HD no problem.

Sorry, but if there is a file that is in his browser and you move it, it will need to be reconnected. This is FCP, where the media management isn’t enterprise class like Avid, where it just finds it. What you need to do is capture and organize, THEN turn it over to him. And if you capture new media while he is working, then capture, organize, THEN add the footage to his project.
Need a cheap network? Having one machine connected to the RAID array and then connecting the two computers via GigE ethernet and enabling sharing is as cheap as you get. Then there is the Small Tree option that Bob Zelin designed (search the Cow, Zelin is in the AJA forum, and he wrote an article on this).
Both stations must have the same version of FCP.
