Need advice on setting up drives
Posted by Bill Willins on July 21, 2009 at 1:01 amI’ve got two G-RAID Drives here , one is 500 GB ( pretty full) , the second is 2 TB ( new drive) . Both connect via FireWire 800. I’ve only got one FW800 port on this G5 dual 2 GHZ. My question is what is the best way to set up these drives. Plug one in FW800 , and then daisy chain the 2nd drive ? Or Plug one in FW800 port and the second in a free FW400 port. Thank you. Bill

July 21, 2009 at 1:06 amI read that daisy chaining drives isn’t a good solution. It’s throughput is slow. What kind of media are you working with? I would put media on your 500GB drive that doesn’t need much speed and connect that through FW400

July 21, 2009 at 1:11 amHi Robert , I’m just editing SD DVCAM material now. But I was just thinking that maybe I should transfer all the footage from 500GB drive to new 2 TB drive. I don’t want to lose all the FCP project links to video files… nervous about this.

July 21, 2009 at 1:52 amwell if your footage is all organized, when you reconnect one media file in FCP, it will recognize the other ones. I think you should transfer your footage to the 2TB drive, especially if your 500GB drive is almost full. The performance of drives starts to become compromised after the 50% point.
So I would transfer all the stuff from the 500GB drive to the 2TB and reconnect the media in FCP before cleaning out your 500GB drive. Then I would use the 500GB drive as a library. That’s what I do with my LaCie. I have an external that I store music on. Then when I want to use a song, I copy it to my project folder in my main drive.
Or you could use your 500GB drive for working in the field if you have a laptop. If/When you make the move to HD, you can offload P2 and SxS media to that drive.
All this making sense?

July 21, 2009 at 2:22 amYes Robert, thanks..makes perfect sense. I am also considering installing an esata card in this older Mac G5 .. it only has PCI option .. not PCI-X. The 2 TB drive has an esata connection. That would be best , especially when I do some occasional stuff with HD footage.

July 21, 2009 at 2:01 pmYou should name the 2TB exactly the same as the 500GB and change the 500’s name. That way you may find FCP reconnects by itself without your manual intervention.
