  ABSOLUTE BEST WAY to convert 60i shots to 24p

  Ok… here’s my situation:

  – Have an offlineRT timeline @ 23.98

  – Timeline uses both 24p (standard, not advanced) footage from a DVX100 as well as “converted” 60i footage. What I did for both types of footage is, in the offline I ran a reverse telecine (in Cinema Tools) on all the footage (all read @ 29.97fps) to get it down to 23.98. So I actually “erroneously” converted my 60i footage to 24p.

  – Now we’re in the online phase (we’ve Media Managed), and we NEED to get the 60i to look right when output back to tape via SDI to tape. We’re trying to get the 60i to convert to 24p, but it looks like CRAP if we run it through Cinema Tools and reverse telecine (JUDDER HELL!!!) G Standards Converter doesn’t looks much better either.

  You should try using Compressor. Play with the frame controls.

  Try Compressor. Make a custom setting with 23.98 as FPS, go into Frame Controls:

  Output fields = progressive
  deinterlace = better or best
  rate conversion = better or best

  see what it comes up with. I’ve gotten pretty impressive results from 60i HDV that needed to go into 1080/23.98 uncompressed.

  So… basically what I did is..
  – In VIDEO SETTINGS, changed the frame rate to 23.976
  – In FRAME CONTROLS, turned everything to BEST, with PROGRESSIVE output.
  – Kept the source frame rate @ 100%

  Gee.. this is very slow process, especially for 10-bit uncompressed SD. But it didn’t look half-bad on the output back to tape deck via SDI (w/added pulldown from FCP). The ONLY issue is, the way Cinema Tools converted the offlineRT timecode vs. how Compressor converts TC, VERY different. So it looks like we’re going to have to slip and slide 9 minutes of our 80 minute timeline. Oh well. At least the stuff looks decent.
