DVCPROHD 23.98 conform
Hello all,
I received a finished 720p24 show which was recorded on P2 so its natively 23.98. I laid it off to our DDR for Color correction via HDSDI, which of course added a pulldown to send out a 59.94 stream. I now need to get it back from the DaVinci, and remove said pulldown, which i assumed would not be a problem. The show is finished, so a 59.94 master is fine, but the client would like a 23.98 QT for their own benefit. I’ve searched the threads and haven’t found anything thats worked. I could manually delete the dupe frames, but it seems their should be an easier solution. Any ideas? Someone has had to have had this issue before.

Cinema Tools only removes pulldown from 29.97 footage. This is 59.94.
Well, I haven’t been able to do this. One time we shot 23.98 on P2, dumped to DVCPRO HD tape (because the producer NEEDED tape…whatever), but in doing so there are no flags on the footage…nothing to indicate that the footage is 23.98. The Varicam will flag the footage, but the decks won’t. So there is no way for FCP to know where to start removing the pulldown from.
Nope…once you output it to 59.94, there is no easy way to get it back to 23.98…not that I know of.
Time to find a place that can color correct with COLOR and leave the frame rate alone…IMHO.

I have tried the Cinema Tools Conform option without success. It just throws my 60fps in a 24p time base; essentially causing slow motion, while the pulldown is still there. As far as I know you can only reverse telicine clips with a 29.97 timebase as this option is grayed out when I try. I also tried DVCPROHD frame rate converter in FCP, but I get an error message stating “an error occured during processing, unable to conform source media.” Unfortunate, as this option looked promising. I’ve got to be doing something wrong here, any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks for responding.

Thanks Shane, ironically it’s somewhat of a relieve knowing others have failed at this as well. Sort of. Anybody know of any scripts for FCP or AE that can cut certain frames in a pattern? Essentially cutting out dupe frames without having to do it by hand. And Color is nice, yes, but isn’t this more of a problem with “legacy formats” like DVCPROHD tape than it is with the color grading system being used?

The Varicam flags the footage as 23.98. Flags that FCP and Avid can read and THEY perform the pulldown, if you choose the right Easy Setup (DVCPRO HD 720p24). Cinema Tools cannot be used here as it is designed for film telecined to tape at 29.97…not 59.94.

Hmmm…the Frame Rate Converter in the TOOLS menu? Might be worth a shot. I have used this on footage accidentally captured at 720p60. But it TOO recognizes the 24p flags and knows where to start removing pulldown from. If there are no flags will it work? Worth a shot. Make sure you set MAKE NEW QT FILE when you test this…

Most of the current color grading systems are file based, and should be able to handle a QT or image sequence that’s 23.976fps.
The problem is in using tape to tape systems with material that is outside of the SMPTE/broadcast specs.
It’s not a flaw in the tape to tape system, and it’s not a flaw in the non-broadcast format, it’s a flaw in trying to get the two of them to work together in that way without compromising one or the other.
