  No audio from converted HD video

  I am having a real nightmare with editing a new video. I need to convert my HD files from my Canon Camcorder to .mov’s because I am running on FCP 4.5 (and I do not have the option to upgrade my os x nor my FCP).

  I bought a couple conversion programs, all with their own problems. Finally I got a program called “Aimersoft Video Converter”.

  I changed the files to .mov’s at a bitrate of 15000, size 1280 X 720, audio bitrate of 128, data rate of 44100. The decoder is called Xvid. The clip plays back smoothly in quicktime player.

  PROBLEM: When I import the file into FCP 4.5 there is no audio and it’s playback is jumpy, bogging the whole program down. I assumed that if quicktime can playback nicely, FCP should too. Isn’t FCP dependent on QT? Does this have to do with the bitrates?

  Side Note/Question: I upped the bitrate for the conversion – I figured the higher the bitrate the better the quality. Is this true?

  you can’t use a converter like that and have it work in fcp.

  you need standard quicktime .mov files.

  HD is not really an option if your on fcp 4.5 and you don’t have a decklink or kona capture card
  or a disk array, since HDV is not supported. (dvcpro-hd is your only option but you need a capture card and a disk array)

  you can set the camcorder to downconvert your footage to DV though and that would work with 4.5

  thats your only real option.
