How do I mimic “coverflow” effect in FCp/Motion? Quickly/Cheaply?
You know, the effect that macs use when browsing using Preview or browsing itunes albums, where the art slides by on individual panels reflected against a black glass “floor”.
Can I mimic that effect easily in FCP studio and/or Apple Motion? Producer wants to know first thing in the morning, would like to use the effect for a promo and we’re on deadline. Any help welcome.

Download the free plug in called cover flow or cover flux I think. Auberge from fx factory? Google it.

How were the video stills which came to life incorporated in with all the stills? I have the Core Melt version of this, and although I’ve only just started using it, I don’t see the kind of animatable features that were used in this piece.

I have no knowledge about the Coremelt copy of CoverFlux and I don’t know if they copied the 3D capabilities of the plugin. My version has full keyframable XYZ motion around the composition.
I think the Berkeley students grabbed a still from the video, made the plugin full frame and then mixed to the video running to get that great transition between stories.

The freebie version of the CoreMelt for FxFactory uses stills only. If you want to use video in the coverflow effect you must purchase the retail version.
I’ve got to add that this free effect plugin for Motion or FCP almost perfectly mimics Apple’s coverflow preview display. to a fault. And that’s the problem. You don’t a chance to bring the image forward or to hold it in an unobscured position in 3D like you want to. It’s very frustrating in its lack of controls so take a few minutes to examine the coverflow display inside the OS so you can get an idea of the restrictions imposed. But it’s FREE.

A couple of things wrong here:-
1) Coremelt is not part of the FxFactory group of plugin developers anymore
2) My original version of CoverFlux (which inspired copies) will let you bring an image forward, hold it or indeed hold it offscreen.
It is of course as we said above, free 🙂
