    I have played with HD files in After Effects before. And I am currently editing HDV files quite handily in Avid. But when I import a raw HDV (m2t) file into After Effects, it becomes unusable. Just so slow, even moving ahead a single frame seems to be too much for my system. Is this just a quirk of HDV files? My computer is mega-fast (core 2 duo, 4 gigs RAM, nvidia quadro fx 3450 graphics card).

    Yes. Convert the file to something like Photo-JPEG before using it in AE. Search the AE COW for “HDV” for more info.
