How much can I magnify the footage?
Posted by Bill Doyle on July 2, 2009 at 8:03 pmFootage was shot in 24p HDV and imported as ProRes. One of the interviews is not framed properly and I would like to increase the size. If final output is SD-DVD, what can I get away with? 5%? 10% More?
Is there any way to do it in the browser before making all the subclips or will it need to be done once the individual clips are in the timeline?
Thanks,
Bill

Any more than 10% and it will be very noticeable. That is my limit, except in EXTREME cases.

YOu can do it only in the timeline, but then drag the clips from the timeline to the Browser to make new clips. Then you can work from those.

July 2, 2009 at 8:13 pmIf it’s in ProRes you can probably get away with 15%. Yes you can do it to the master clip in the browser before you make subclips.

July 2, 2009 at 8:55 pmNot much, especially since it’s HDV footage. Converting to ProRes doesn’t give you any quality enhancement so it’s already badly compressed as it is. Anything over 100% scale will be noticeable.

July 2, 2009 at 10:16 pmGuys…. Dude said that he is down-converting it to DVD. You can get away with a little more than 15% before its noticeable.
I did a video for a client that I had to blow up an HDV image about 200% shot with the Sony Z1U in its “progressive” mode, and the client loved it. Was it noticeable?… Yeah, but it was acceptable. Fox Sports accepted the show it went into.
Did I like doing that? NO. But sometimes you have to do things for clients that you don’t like doing. Its called “making the client happy”.
Its amazing how much you can getaway with when you down-convert to SD from HD.

exactly.
and i think 200 percent is about right.
maybe in your case it was noticeable because you blew it up in the HDV sequence,
then squished it all back down to SD.
fair enough!i did a show a while back that was partly shot on HDV, but was to be finished as SD.
we did our on-line in an SD environment,
and any shots that needed to be blown up, we re-captured as HDV (where possible)
and scaled up in the SD sequence.
looked great!a lot of these were chopper shots, so we got amazing zooms in and out.
anyway if you have the time to do this, it’s worth it.
or maybe the original poster should be cutting in an SD timeline.nick

July 3, 2009 at 6:13 pmConsidering it’s a (nominal) 1920 x1080, downconverted to SD, I should have thought that simple maths would give you a factor of 1080/576 which would give you pixel for pixel.
Assuming FCS scaling is perfect!!!
These are PAL figures.

July 3, 2009 at 7:48 pmRelying on the downconverted destination supposes that you will edit your program or at least assemble your program in SD before you send it to compression and authoring. It also means that you’ve permanently limited yourself to SD output or lower. If you’re OK with that then sure.
All the best,
Tom
