Trying to fit the FLV player frame, but not working.
I am trying to get the highest quality video from FCP to FLV to fit the flash player that the web designer told me. Changing the framing of the player is out of the question because I have tried that route many times and they won’t.
The FLV player is set to 643×362 which is a 16×9 frame, ratio 1.78. However, my source material is all over the place, so I have to conform everything. Some footage is animation that I made in a 16×9 frame, some is 16×9 HD footage, and other is letterbox SD fotage. I’ve put links below with each case. I’ve been at it for the whole weekend and can’t come with a solution. They really want me to zoom in on the video to get rid of the black on the tops, but I feel that is changing the pixels aspect ratio and the image looks strange.

Case#1:
– Video/Animation that I did in Motion at 960×720,pixel aspect ration of 1.33, Field Order Lower First (even) @ 29.97fps
– exported the QT and did tried two things, but the one that looked the best has this workflow: import the animation clip into FCP, then export out using QT Conversion to the player setting size. After that put that clip into Adobe Media Encoder. Text looks pretty sharp, some video is eh…See here:

Case#2:
This footage is HD, so it is already natively 16×9. Shot on that Sony, cut with the other animation that I had created. Exported using the the same QT Conversion and run through media encoder. End result, black along the edges.See here:

When I export the native QT into compressor, I set up a droplet to the specs, but doesn’t looks so sharp.

One problem that contributes to diminished video quality is the image is not the best size for encoding Flash. Both the horizontal and vertical dimensions should be evenly divisible by 16 (640×360 for instance). Take my word for this. There’s a long-winded technical explanation. Obviously, increasing the data rate will increase the quality. At the image size you’re using your data rate should be at least 500 to 700kbps. As for cropping, in Flash Encoder > Settings > Crop and Resize use the controls in the Crop section. You’ll notice a line descends (and rises) as you adjust the controls. If you have black on the sides, crop in that direction, too. Crop to a pixel or two past the black (keep the numbers even top and bottom) and Flash Encoder will take care of scaling the image. Also, be sure to use the On2 VP6 codec (In Settings > Video). Hope this helps.

Thanks for your post. I knew that the player was off because I vaguely remembered needed it to be divisible by 4. I was telling them that the dimensions were off but the web designer said that they checked up on various Aspect Ratio Calculators such as the one below:
