unable to capture video via FW after monitor hookup
So I recently purchased a TV monitor so I can view footage on miniDV before capturing it, saving me space without having to capture garbage, etc. I am using a JVC Professional deck with a DV out for FW and RCA in the back going to the monitor. Well, I’m able to view the footage just fine on the monitor. However, when I went to capture the footage, I no longer have any signal going through my FW to FCP. FCP can control the deck, start, stop, rewind, but I have no signal. I’ve changed all the settings I can think of on the deck, I’ve unplugged the FW, turned everything off and restarted FCP and the computer and same thing. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks!

Disconnect the monitor….does it work now? Not sure why it would, but worth a shot. Choose the DV Easy Setup? Trash Preferences.

Still nothing! This is bad. I can’t capture my MiniDV with my professional deck. What the hell? I have work to do! Anybody know anything about the JVC SR-DVM700? Does heat affect these units? It’s warm, but it isn’t that warm. I shut the unit off and it started flashing Resetting. Then it went off. Then I turned it on, it was working then it flashed Resetting again and it turned off. I purchased this deck in January and have only used it a few times. This is really weird. Again, the FW controls the deck, but I get no picture or real signal that FCP can work with.

In my Audio/Video Settings under Summary, Sequence is set to 48kHz, Capture preset the same, Device Control Preset is FW NTSC and then under Video Playback it says [Missing] Apple Firewire NTSC (720 x 480]. Does anyone know how to make that recognize my deck? Hmmm. I’m very confused. Thanks for any help.

Has the deck worked before and it’s just not working now? Have you tried selecting “Refresh A/V devices” in FCP under View? Have you tried power cycling the computer? Sometimes FW decks/cameras are finicky about the order in which things are powered up.

Hey Shane and Andrew! Thanks for your help. It appears that the culprit is HEAT! At 2:00 in the morning, everything seems to be working fine. All of my equipment is cool now. It was warm earlier in the day, but I didn’t think it was that warm. I guess it doesn’t take much. Thanks again.
