  HDV project to miniDV

  Hi guys,

  I need to make a miniDV tape of a documentary playing out from a FCP HDV project. I know it’s going to loose so much in definition but the festival it is for doesn’t have a HDV deck to project from, so it’s going to be miniDV

  My sequence settings are HD(1440×1080) 16:9
  Most of the footage was shot HD 1440×1080, upper (odd) field, but there are a few clips dv pal

  I tried exporting a quicktime with dv-pal compression, re-import into a new dv pal seuence and then playing out but every camera movement (especially pans) looks jittery

  I also tried copying the HDV sequence into a new DV pal sequence and then rendering. Once I play out the camera movement seemed ok this time, but all the clips had been zoomed in

  Any idea/suggestion?

  Manuela- Click on your DV sequence. Go to Audio/Video Settings>sequence>check anamorphic.

  Hi Manuela,

  To down-rez HDV to DV, my personal experience would be to:

  1) Export your sequence from FCP using ‘current settings’ [ie. as HDV and not to do your DV conversion yet]
  2) Send the exported QT movie to Compressor and encode using a standard Anamorphic DV PAL preset [should be under the ‘Advanced’ formats]
  3) Bring the encoded movie back into FCP and drop it on an Anamorphic DV PAL sequence.

  Kai,

  Are you saying export the seq. using quicktime/current settings self contained and then take that QT. file into compressor for conversion to DV?

  If so, why the extra step? Why not go directly from timline to Export using compressor to do the conversion?

  Hi Jerry,

  The ‘current settings’ QT doesn’t have to be self-contained – though I do that because I always keep a highest quality copy of the finished edit in QT format for archival.

  From my experience, it’s faster to compress from an exported QT. Besides, it frees up my FCP while Compressor does its work.
