    Hi All,
I’m perplexed by a project I’m working on. I’m hoping someone out there has a clue about solving the issue. I’m editing on a 8 core with a 30″ cinema display. The clips are a mixture of DSLR footage, key framed still images and AE renders in a timeline set at 1920×1080, pro res, 29.97. Initially it was set to upper field and I changed it to progressive. It all looks pretty good in fcp but when I export a QT in the native size and codec and play it on my desktop it stutters. It seems to happen with horizontal motion from all 3 types of media. The DSLR footage and AE renders match the timeline settings. To me it does not look like a flipped field issue, When I play it repeatedly the stutters are inconsistent, sometimes not at all, sometimes I’ll get 4-5 hits over a 3″ shot. I also output a H264, medium-high, 1280×720 and that has similar issues. The earlier QT output with fields is playing fine, but the final will be viewed progressive and I’m getting field artifacts and soft edges so it needs to be progressive.

    any ideas?
    Thanks in advance: )

Disparate codecs. I’d convert all to a common format before editing.

If your output is progressive, you must somehow deinterlace the interlaced files.
You apparently have approached deinterlacing incorrectly in this workflow so try something else. Me, I’d be creating new progressive media before importing the files into the project.

Your stuttering playback is, by your statement that stuttering occurs at different places, is a question of drive throughput. Your system cannot play this file.

Hope you get better, likely conflicting, advice over the next several hours. Stay tuned.

thanks for the feedback. The way the footage stutters looks like through put, but the fcp media and renders all reside on an xsan. I can see how a 1920×1080 ProRes HQ QT might stutter when played from the desktop, but I would expect smoother playback from a 1280 H264. With field issues I would expect a more regular stuttering pattern. I won’t be able to get back to that project for a few days, but I think I may be mixing 30 and 29.97 footage. Is that a likely cause? I probably should have mentioned that the horizontal movements are slow. I don’t think it would be noticeable if the moves were faster.

    thanks again,
    Morris
