  FCP imports layered PSD files as flattened images!

  I’m running Final Cut Studio 2 on a new MBP unibody 17″. I don’t have a copy of Photoshop myself, but a client has sent me a layered PSD file containing titles on a transparent background. I need to import the PSD file as a sequence so that I can separate the layers and superimpose the text on my video. However, when importing the files into FCP they show up as regular, flattened images against black, and the compressor listed is ‘Planar RGB’.

  I’ve asked him to send the file several times and even try making it from scratch, but I get the same result every time. Is there something he or I might be doing wrong? Does the PSD file have to be a specific resolution or DPI in order for this to work?

  If the PSD was created on a Windows machine, it must be opened in Photoshop on a Mac and then saved as a new file. That new PSD will then be imported as a separate layered timeline in FCP when imported.

  Make sure that there’s no separate alpha channel in the .psd file. That will keep FCP from seeing the layers. You must delete the alpha in Photoshop.
