Export Question
Hi Folks…
I have 2 questions that I like your opinion on.
Question #1
I’m color correcting a show edited in FCP with the DVCPRO HD codec (720p25)
Now I want to grade that in Color and export it to the same codec
But the final deliverable is in SD PAL Uncompressed 10BitWhen I sent the footage back to FCP, I’ll get a DVCPRO HD Sequence, but how do i get a SD final.
A: by using Export>Quicktime Movie, Recent Settings, and use Compressor for the transcoding to SD Uncompressed 10Bit
B. by changing the sequence settings to SD Uncompressed 10Bit, Render Timeline, Export>Quicktime Movie with Current Settings (and deselect Recompress All Frames)
C. by just using Export>Quictime Movie>Setting Uncompressed 10 Bit (and select recompress all frames)
D. I know you can do a hardware conversion but I lack the Kona 3, I do have a Decklink Mulitbridge

I recently edited a show in XDCAM IMX PAL 50 Mb/s
Also here I needed a Uncompressed 10Bit version for dump
A. by changing Sequence Settings to Uncompressed 10Bit, Render Timeline, Export>Quicktime Movie with Current Settings (don’t select recomress all frames)
B. by changing Sequence Settings to Uncompressed 10Bit,Do Not Render Timeline, Export>Quicktime Movie with Current Settings (select recomress all frames)
C. by keeping the Sequence Settings to XDCAM IMX PAL 50 Mb/s, Export>Quicktime Movie> Settings set to Uncompressed 10Bit (select recompress all frames)
I’m at least interested in the difference between A and B (rendering timeline without recompress all frames, or not rendering timeline and with recompress all frames)
These are workflow options that I hope you can shed some light upon

Just to clarify, are you delivering a file, not a tape? If you were delivering a tape then most capture cards would do the down-conversion for you. They won’t help you if you’re delivering a file though.
If you’re delivering a file, then I’d recommend doing the conversion in Compressor.

I agree with Alex, Export to Compressor is the best option

I have never been happy with letting FCP make a down conversion with any of the methods you describe, compared to a hardware down convert. I also have a Decklink card and their down convert is not good either. Kona is the best at that.
External hardware is a better approach if you are delivering tape. Compressor is the best alternative if making a file.

So through compressor for the downconvert from HD to SD
But what in the case of the XDCAM timeline (which stays in SD)???

Then you might as well stay inside FCP – Just turn the XDCAM sequence into an uncompressed 10bits sequence (choose the preset in the sequence settings) and go File > Export Quicktime Movie (selfcontained of course).

Okay… this is what I always do in this situation… But trying to figure out the “recompress all frames” feature.
I always use Recompress All Frames when I’m exporting a sequence to another codec then the sequence codec
But in this situation you change the sequence settings to another codec and then render the sequence. Do you use recompress all frames in this situation, or is it better not to.
And what happens if you didn’t render the timeline after changing the codec to uncompressed 10Bit.
Then I would assume you need to use Recompress All Frames …Still a bit confusing to me … would love to clear this up

To be honest I am a bit confused on this point – the manual says that “media that have to be created from scratch” (things that have to be rendered) need recompressing. But I always have this option deselected. I always render to the current settings (with or without things being rendered in the timeline) and I never noticed a problem.
NB I forgot to mention a few things:
– in the Video Processing tab of the Sequence settings you should switch to 10-bits processing, if you want to take advantage of those 2 extra bits.
– what is convenient about sequences that are set to 8- or 10-bits uncompressed is that you will have more filters available in real time.
