  • QT has “squished” look to it upon export

Posted by Matt Torti on June 17, 2009 at 7:03 pm

I have a final at 720×486 which I am exporting as the same size. Upon the export, the Quicktime movie appears squished in the footage, not the frame (which still reads as 720×486). I’ve tried adjusting the sequence pixel aspect ratio, but it doesn’t help the exported QT.

I believe this is an animorphic issue because when I import the QT back into final cut pro the footage appears normal.

How do I turn off animorphic settings in the export? I have manually entered the frame size each time, as 720×486. Should I use the defaults?

    Any advice is appreciated.

This is normal. QT does not display the pixels in the correct aspect ratio unless you tell it to. There are no flags in the file to tell QT that the footage is anamorphic.

In movie properties, you can change the Conform Aperture setting to “encoded pixels”.

    John,

Thanks for the response, but it didn’t really have any effect on the QT changing the aperture. It seems when I use FCP to export, and use their settings (say the 720×486 default) the footage comes out pefect in QT, but reads as having a frame size of 640 x 480 – which is neither what I exported as, nor the actual size as recognized by FCP (it imports as a 720×486).

It has to be an animorphic issue. I’m surprised this hasn’t come to light to Final Cut yet. Having a disparity between what quicktime recognizes outside of final cut, and what final cut recognizes itself is an annoying and nerve-racking issue.

Quicktime reports the size needed to display the image properly using square pixels…which is what your computer screen uses. FCP is using D1/DV non-square pixels.

Actually Matt, if you search this forum you will find it comes up all the time. The solution is simple. If you are exporting a file to be used to create a broadcast master or DVD, you leave it anamorphic.

If the file is for web or computer based playback, you set the pixel aspect to 16:9. This can be done easily with a calculator or by downloading this cute app (aspect ratio 1.8,)which does it for you.

Just enter your current pixel aspect and it will tell you the settings to use on export.

My question has nothing to do with 16:9 aspect ratio.

It has to do with the disparity between the intended output of 720×486 and the received output of 640×480.

[Matt Torti] “My question has nothing to do with 16:9 aspect ratio.”

Then why did your first post talk about an export looking squished and it being anamorphic? That means the original is 16:9 squeezed into an anamorphic 4:3 frame.

Where do you find the “movie properties” ? Where do you set the pixel aspect ratio upon export? when I export to quicktime movie I do not have these options.
