  • Still Image degradation in hd timeline

Posted by Mike Browne on June 4, 2009 at 4:27 am

I am using FInal Cut Pro 6 and working in a 720p24 timeline. I am trying to add still images (jpeg) to the timeline. When I open the images in the viewer before adding them to the timeline they appear to be full quality, however once I place the image in the timeline the quality degrades significantly.
I suspected it might just be due to the render settings, but even when I export using prores hq the image quality is still poor.

I am relatively new to final cut pro, so I am not sure if there are some settings I could tweak to make the images display at full quality, or if there is some adjustment I should do to the image in photoshop before importing them (right now they are sized 1280×720 and displaying at 100% in the timeline)?

    Thanks

Do you have an external broadcast monitor? It’s the only way to know for sure what your visual quality is.

I do not have an external output monitor, but my main purpose is exporting to the web.

I am just curious why there is such a noticeable quality loss when I move the image file into the timeline, and wondering if there is any way to workaround this so that atleast the output quality is higher (i.e. still frames from the full quality output file are comparable to the original jpg files).
    Thanks

I’m new on forum. Have similar problem, but working in SD. Working with hi-res (3.5 mp) stills on timeline. Project originally created in FCP 4, but I recently migrated from old Mac G4, to new MacPro with FCP 6. Before the migration, I had no resolution problem. But now, stills on timeline look very low res in both canvas and viewer, even though file size is still 3.5 mp. I did a test by re-importing an image, thinking default import settings are different in FCP 6. When viewing this image in canvas it still looks low res, but in viewer it is now the hi-res image it should be. I’ve searched all settings, but can’t find anything that would be causing this.

There are many threads discussing this topic. The short answer is while the Viewer is using QT to display the image, the FCP Canvas is an approximation. If the Viewer’s set to 100% you are seeing the best you’re going to see there. What I suggest is you finish a short test project all the way through to completion and see what it looks like on the web. Then you’ll know.

its a FCP bug that never gets fixed. once you actually render the area, it will be fine, but as any sort of RT preview, even a green bar one, FCP uses a procy res image instead.
