export as hdv if not hd
Curious about if I have dvcam ntsc standard footage and I export it as a quicktime reference movie as 720p hdv, will it be better quality and or upconvert itself? And if not what setting would be the best to export it as to play on hd monitor 720p capability? Thanks in advance.

Nope. First off, you can only export a reference movie as the same codec your footage exists as. It is a REFERENCE QT…meaning that it is a file that points to, or references, existing media. No upcoversion will occur.
Second, blowing up 720×480 to 1280×720…the 5:1 4:1:1 compression…will not make the footage look better at all. In fact, it will make it look worse. You will make the digital artifacts inherent in the footage larger. And then going from I-frame to GOP? Ugh.

I would use DVCPRO HD or ProRes…but it still won’t look good. You are blowing up an SD image. You could have decent luck using Compressor, I do this all the time with DV or police dash camera video. I have to blow it up to 1080i ProRes, and it looks decent. Doesn’t make it look better by any stretch of the imagination, but it is clear enough to see what is going on.
Why do you need to blow it up to 720p.
