Exporting with 2 video channels
Posted by Dustin Parsons on May 28, 2009 at 9:02 pmIs is possible to export 2 discrete video channels from FCP, one with an alpha channel (like a tv station logo)?
I would like to be able to revisit a project and have the option of turning the logo off.
Thanks for your help.

May 28, 2009 at 9:19 pmNo. Export the project twice, one tape the TEXTED one with all the graphics and titles, and one TEXTLESS with all that clean. Or throw all the TEXTLESS elements at the end of the tape, with slates indicating the timecode they need to go to to replace the TEXTED footage.

May 28, 2009 at 9:34 pmI’m pretty sure I’ve seen this done with subtitles before. I guess they were added with a different program after export from FCP then?

May 28, 2009 at 9:39 pmHi, Dustin
Forgive me if I’m telling you something you already know, but closed-captions are different from subtitles. And you should be able to export a QT from FCP with closed-captions that you can turn on or off. (Closed-caption data is not in the visible portion of the video signal, but is encoded in the vertical interval.)
And I don’t think you can actually edit closed captions in FCP, though there are third-party programs which permit it to be added. Google “MacCaption” for example.
Hope that helps.

May 28, 2009 at 9:41 pmYeah, probably. Subtitles are very different than keyable material.

May 28, 2009 at 10:07 pmCaption data can pass through FCP as long as you do not do anything to the clip that forces new media to be created from it. then the data is gone.

You’ll end up with slightly more data, but you can get everything back. Way more efficient / handy for another version.Bouke

June 6, 2009 at 6:27 pmYeah, apparently there is no real way to do this. The closest thing I was able find was in Quicktime under Window > Show Movie Properties > Video Track (tab)
There is a box in the lower left hand corner for adding a Mask and the composting mode selector is directly below that.
I was able to add the logo as a mask (as I had wanted to do) but I was unable to get it to look good. I believe it was because my logo had drop shadow that faded to transparency. I bet it would work if it there were no gradients though.
