  • Is therre a way to back up or copy footage from one drive to another ?

Posted by Jonathan Young on May 27, 2009 at 12:57 pm

I am going out of town and I am working on a very important project, I have all the media on a external firewire drive, I would like to back all the media up on a second drive, just in case something happens to the drive, I need to take all precautions, so in FCP 6 is there a way I can back up/copy all the video files I digitized to another firewire drive ?

    Thanks

    3 ways to do this

    1. In FCP, use Media Manager

    2. Clone a hard drive

    3. Drag and drop files to a hard drive.

Hi Steve, thanks for responding, I live right outside of Chicago, and I was a member of FCP users group, back when they use to meet in the Tribune building and when they use to meet at the Planetarium, I stop attending because my work Schedule changed, and I always had to work Weds eves. My question is which would be easier, cloning a drive, FCP media manager, I thought if I dragged and dropped, it would not copy the video it actually moves the video, unless I am doing something wrong.

Depends on what you want to achieve. Media Manager will copy EVERYTHING you need for your project.

If you simply just want to copy your scratch drive, all you need to do is drag and drop your files. Just be aware that if you have any sound files, graphics or any other assets in your project, they must also be on that drive. It is also a good idea to name the drive the exact name as your original or you will have to reconnect all your media.

I would not worry about copying render files. It’s always a good to rerender the project.

I would also think about bringing a clone of your system drive in the event that crashes.

A drag and drop will mean files need to be reconnected.

Media Manage will solve that but when you return, if you go back to your old drive, you will need to reconnect.

Try Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the drive.
