Speed Up Mpeg Streamclip
Posted by Luke Dollard on May 19, 2009 at 11:51 pmIs there any way to speed up mpeg streamclip?
I have an 2×2.8ghz quad-core xeon mac pro, so even when i run mpeg streamclip with all 4 instances at one it barely gets to 50% of the cpu cap.
Is there a way to speed up this program.
Or perhaps a better way to do what i do.
Basically i am converting 1440×1080 HDV .m2t files to 1440×1080 hdv deinterlaced files. I am then editing them in FCP for output to many different formats including HD WMV.
For one 30 min clip it takes about 1 hour or so, i usually have about 30 to do they all range in length as well.
My machine isn’t being used to capacity at all and its usually quicker to just use premiere pro 2 on my laptop than run this process.
Any suggestions?

May 20, 2009 at 12:24 amSoftware needs to be re-written to make efficient use of multicore machines.
Considering its free, I don’t think you can expect a lot of resources to be devoted to the project.

May 20, 2009 at 12:26 amWhat Zane told you is correct. If the program isn’t written to take advantage of all available cores, that’s a limitation of the program and something you’re going to simply have to live with. The program is free, you can’t expect it to have everything.
You could consider setting up a cluster using QMaster to have Compressor use more cores, and that might help you. (There are considerable postings on this in the compression techniques forum so I won’t repeat it here), also Sorenson Squeeze is made to use multiple cores, but that program is not free.
The other issue is, as fast as your system is, HDV requires considerable horsepower to process due to the long GOP nature of the codec, so it won’t get transcoded as quickly as an I-Frame codec.

I think you misunderstand the quote in my signature. What I mean by it is that there are a lot of people out there that think that with a different camera or different computer, or different software that they will automatically be able to do better video. But the truth is that you can give a cheep camera to a skilled camera man and you will still get better footage then the footage from a guy with a super expensive camera but a complete lack of skill when it comes to shooting video.
What you have is a technical limitation NOT a “artistic problem”, and your issue in NO WAY limits your creativity.

was being sarky not serious.
compressor wont help as it has nothing to do with mpeg streamclip unless you can get streamclip to work within compressor?

May 20, 2009 at 12:52 amYou’re using MPEG Streamclip to deinterlance, correct? You could use compressor to do that, and use QMaster to allow compressor to use multiple cores.

May 20, 2009 at 12:55 amwhy would i do it twice? i find compressors de-interlacing filter to be terrible. mpeg streamclip actually does it better than anything else i have which is a sad statement to make, considering the cost of FCS2.

May 20, 2009 at 1:00 amHave you used Frame controls to use a better deinterlacing algorithm?

Agreed. The deinterlace from the filters tab is no good. You need to set the deinterlace mode to best in the frame controls tab. I would not rely on MPEG Streamclip for deinterlacing unless you really need to, also one canot really crticize that program as it does an amazing job for free, especially when coming from Long Gop Mpeg2.
You need to setup a virtual Cluster in Compressor (google it) and put your 8 core and Compressor to work.
