    hi friends,

i want to make a year countdown for my friends birthday. could you give me any hint how to start with. the numbers have to flip from 2007 to 1954. is there a methode to script this countdown? i added a picture so that you get an idee of what i am talking about.

    thanks in advance…

my advice is to use flash in case you don’t have a good reason to use ae. i don’t think there’s scripting possibilities in after effects because video formats cannot process scripts. i have simple javascript to countdown to selected date. it can simple be transformed into flash action script. let me now if you’re interested in it.

If you’re on Mac, Live Type has a font called Flip Count that does exactly what you’re looking for. If not this isn’t too hard in AE. Create 10 Pre-comps, one of each number (0-9) on the card background.
Duplicate these 10 then use a mask or matte, so that you have a separate comp for the top half and bottom half of each number. Then use card wipe ( columns-1,rows-1, flip direction reversed) to flip from the top half of one number to the bottom half of the next number. Once you have a comp that counts up from 0 to 9 you have the building block fro the rest of your animation.

so this would work for an airport departure and arrival sign?
only… it would require A LOT more precomps, correct?
