HD to BetaSP
I am stumped. I have a short project (sequence settings 1920 x 1080, frame rate 23.98) that I shot on Sony PMW-EX1. Has some stills mixed in as well. A festival is requesting the piece and they would like it on BetaSP.
Before I forget, I have FCP 6.0.4 and Quicktime 7.5. Don’t want to get a thrashing!
I have tried several compressions and had my best luck so far with making a quicktime right out of FCP using current settings (XDCAM), opening it in Quicktime, and then exporting to quicktime movie using uncompressed 8 bit, 720 x 480, and changing frame rate to 29.97. The resulting clip plays great in Quicktime. When I bring it into FCP and put it into a SD timeline the audio is no longer in sync. It seems the video is changing to 29.97, but the audio isn’t.
Is there another compression that I should try? Am I totally screwing up somewhere along the way? Do I need to address the audio separately in Soundtrack?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

This is why so many of us recommend hardware such at the AJA Kona boards. They perform these conversions in realtime during output.
Is there a post facility in your area that has a Kona board or some other conversion tool that can perform this for you? Just export a self contained movie of your timeline and take that movie to them for output. That would be the easiest and cleanest option for you.

Hey Suzan,
Don’t export back to XDCAM. Is a very compressed format: will crunch all that you could have done to the fooatege and pictures. Also it takes ages exporting.
Set “render all YUV material in High Precision” and export to ProRess. Bigger file but worth.
Then for the downscaling-printing to video, if you can do it, as Walter suggest, with a Kona or similar, the best of the best.

You can do this down-conversion in realtime as you layoff to tape if you have a Kona, IoHD, Decklink HD, Multibridge, Matrox MXO2, or MOTU V4HD.
If you do not have one of those capture products, find a post house or dub house that does.

Thank you all so much for your input. I did a ProRes 422 compression and am sending it to a dupe house with Kona board. Better to have it look good than jerry-rig it.
